in 1869

The rain at Wellington was heavier than it has been for the previous sixteen years while it lasted, also the loudest thunder heard; thunder also occurred on 14th and 16th, that on the latter date being very severe, with most vivid lightning; wind N.W. An observer at Nelson also reported a very heavy thunderstorm with rain, between 2pm and 3pm.
